In the mid-1960s, the ÖBB ordered a new series of motor locomotives to replace the steam locomotives 52, 77 and 93. After building several prototypes, Jenbacher Werke finally delivered the 2043 series with a 1,500 hp two-stroke diesel engine. Initially, the locomotive was allowed to travel at a maximum speed of only 100 km/h, but later it was allowed to reach a speed of 110 km/h. With its axle weight of 17 t, it was also suitable for operation on sidings.
