In the 1950s, the Deutsche Bundesbahn developed a diesel locomotive type program to renew their rolling stock. The main goal was the replacement of steam traction on the relatively extensive local lines. A single-engine V 100 series with 1100 hp engines was developed for the mixed branch line. In parallel with these V 100.10s, a total of 380 machines equipped with 1350 hp engines as V 100.20s were delivered from 1962 to 1965.
With the introduction of the computer number, the serial designation of the more powerful machines changed to 212. After the classic red color, many machines received an ocean blue/beige paint from 1974/75.
After the elimination of numerous branch lines, the classical field of use of the V 100 has become smaller. Suburban transport and transfer trains were still on the agenda of the mission. Some machines were deployed in construction train service. Numerous locomotives found their new owners, among others with SV railways and track companies in Germany and abroad.
