In 1958, the Austrian Federal Railways purchased a series of 400-horsepower Class 2062 motor locomotives to replace the costly and labor-intensive steam locomotives that provided shunting services. The Tyrolean company Jenbacher Werke produced a total of 65 units of this small two-axle diesel locomotive until 1966.
The locomotive, with striking cast-iron faceplates that also served as ballast weights, was used throughout Austria for shunting and maintenance services. On the Lower Austrian sidings, these locomotives pulled passenger trains that had one or two cars. The last locomotives were taken out of service in 2003. Some of the locomotives are still used today as locomotives for factory and maintenance trains and are designated as X262 series.
