From 1955, the German Reichsbahn GDR developed the V 60 diesel-hydraulic locomotive for medium-duty shunting service. These machines were primarily intended to end the less efficient use of steam locomotives in shunting service. In January 1962, the first locomotives were delivered to Raw Dessau. Unlike the series delivered later, the locomotives of the first construction series were produced with smaller windscreens and a narrow driver's cab without a rain roof for the side windows. As a result, train drivers were exposed to the elements and unprotected while monitoring the shunting work. The V 60 cars were initially put into service in three different liveries. The locomotives of the first series (up to V 60 1170) were supplied with dark red paint.
