In the 1950s, the German Federal Railways developed a program to renew its diesel locomotive fleet. The main goal was to replace steam traction on the still relatively extensive local lines. Single engine locomotives of the V 100 series with 1100 hp engines were developed for operation on mixed sidings. In parallel with these V 100.10s, a total of 380 machines equipped with 1350 hp engines as V 100.20s were delivered between 1962 and 1965.
With the introduction of the computer number, the designation of a number of more powerful machines was changed to 212. After the classic red color, many machines were given an ocean blue/beige livery from 1974/75.
After the decommissioning of numerous branch lines, even the classical field of use of the V 100 was reduced. Some machines were used in the service of construction trains. A number of locomotives found new owners, among others at SV railways and track construction companies in Germany and abroad.
