In the 1960s, the E 03 series was the most powerful electric locomotive to date for use in passenger train services on the Deutsche Bundesbahn. From 1970 to 1974, a total of 145 series locomotives were built and officially designated as the 103.1 series. Visually, the 103 series is still one of the most beautifully designed electric locomotives today. Up to road number 215, the locomotives were delivered with pantographs.
