After the merger of the former regional railways to form the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft in 1920, the variety of types of existing wagons for passenger transport was almost impossible to keep track of. This led to the development of new passenger cars of a standard design. The heavy, all-steel design of the two-axle through-car offered more safety and comfort for the passengers, but on the other hand it was also the cause of the sometimes quite rumbling driving noise. This was the reason why the wagons were soon given the nickname "Donnerbüchsen"
